Music and performance is an integral part of the LA DECOM. Unlike Burning Man with unlimited space, we can only host a limited number of large scale sound areas.
Each year we do our best to represent the Burning Man community and strive to include as many different acts, crews, sounds, sights and spectacles as possible. Each year we let various new stages host areas. We rotate as much as possible, so that every crew can have a part in the creation.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
It's simple. You bring your sound-system, your stage and your decoration. The Decom team programs community acts from 12pm to 3 p.m. (i.e., new members to the community, out of town visitors, those acts that are not affiliated with any performance crew)
From 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., the Decom team and the stage discuss which acts would go best on the stage. Then from 6 p.m. until 12am., the stage is yours for you to do as you wish.
In practice, what happens is each stage has a great deal of choice over vibe, style and types of acts that will grace their sound system.
We just make sure that the 7 stages reflect as many bands, dj crews, spoken word and visual acts as possible.
If the event breaks even, we have a small budget to pay for LIMITED costs incurred in bringing a large scale sound system to the streets of LA.
AT THE MEETING... we will go over details of how it works, and why we do it this way. Also, we hope that by putting everyone in the same room, some groups will naturally pair up and combine to host stages. Some groups are strong on sound, weak on decoration. Some groups have stages, but no sound. So come to the meeting, we'll all get in one room and we can start the process nice and early. We'll figure out who wants to work together.
We are starting the stage process much earlier this year, so that stages have extra time to plan and build.
